The science of the art of capoeira

Capoeira is a mixture of Fighting, Dance, Acrobatics and Music

Who said? Tell it who told you?

Once I was in a coffee bar in London chatting with a friend of mine and she commented that her father was not a big fan of capoeira, I was intrigued and wanted to know why, how can you not like something that you don't even know? More than that she told me that her father thought that capoeira was connected with some kind of religious cult or something similar to that so I told her that I would write a song about it, because some times people say things about other people or about things that they don't even understand. If we want to talk about capoeira then come to capoeira, practice and train capoeira, live and learn about capoeira then you may say something! The music I wrote goes like this, lyrics below the video:

Meu patua - Song Tutorial

Contra Mestres Casquinha and Xuxo of CDO wrote the verses to go with this beautiful song. Watch the tutorial with clips of Casquinha himself in action, learn the lyrics, discover more of capoeira's rich mythology and become a better musician yourself.

A patuá is a sacred amulet, magical protection to achieve the famed 'corpo fechado' (protected body) and stay safe in capoeira. As Casquinha tells us a patuá can be anything that is sacred - his berimbau, his friends and the songs that accompany him on life's journey.

Ladja Video

This video shows an art form today known as the Ladja or Danmye (previously entitled the Ag'Ya) of Martinique. Two combatants engage each other in a game of trickery, skill and acrobatic agility. At the head of the circle musicians control the tempo of the contest singing, playing drums and possibly other instruments of African origin (it's hard to see). Could this far-away Caribbean lookalike be a long-lost capoeira cousin? Does this offer us clues as to Capoeira's African origins? The similarity is nothing but striking!

mestre-suassuna-e dirceu.jpeg

The two albums here are long standing classics from two of the most published musicians in the capoeira world - Mestre Suassuna, founder of Cordão de Ouro and Mestre Acordeon, an original student of Mestre Bimba. They both contain absolutely beautiful songs.
Enjoy!

The development of urban capoeira

malandros.jpg

For the second phase in Capoeira history we take a jump to the nineteenth century urban scenario. All Afro-Brazilian cultural manifestations were to be crushed as they were perceived to reinforce a counter-ideology of resistance and belonging - to a group other than the dominant one.
